As a beauty student, I've learned so many things about what to do and what not to do to obtain real beauty. I've been reading an amazing book by Rona Berg called Beauty - The New Basics, which is filled with tips, remedies and how-to's on everything from hair, skin, face and so much more. She outlines a easy 10-step routine to getting a beautiful glow from the inside out! I myself, by no means, follow every single step, but I'm working on it! Here's what she says:
1. Eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. Five servings of each is highly recommended daily. So there you have it! I already follow some of these tips, but there are others that I really need to work on! We'll change that! If you would like to pick up Ms. Berg's amazing book, it can be purchased at Borders Books or on her website http://www.ronaberg.com/.
*I for sure don't eat enough of either, we'll change that!*
2. Take a high-quality multiple vitamin every day, not as a substitute for food, but as a supplement. Vitamin A, C, B, B2 and E are all good choices.
*I USED to be really good at taking my Flintstone vitamins daily, we'll change that!*
3. Fat-in moderation-is a well-kept but invaluable beauty secret. Fat helps your body and skin utilize protein. Do NOT overload on cholesterol-raising saturated animal fats, but unsaturated fats from vegetable oils such as olive, corn, safflower, or canola every day.
*I do get my unsaturated fats, but I also get too much saturated fats, we'll change that!*
4. Drink at least eight glasses of water each day. The best way to keep your skin hydrated is to moisturize from the inside out. The human body, like the earth, is made up of approx. 70 percent water and water accounts for 70 percent of our skin weight, so it is highly important that we continuously replenish with water.
*I drink lots of water, but not eight glasses a day, we'll change that!*
5. Exercise. Daily exercise will get your blood flowing and stimulate the oxygen flow to feed the skin. 20 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week is necessary. Try to breathe deeply from the diaphragm and avoid taking shallow, quick breaths.
*Exercise......we'll change that?!*
6. Don't drink too much coffee, tea, or alcohol. All are fine in moderation, but don't overdo it. These three liquids are diuretics (increasing the volume urine) that dehydrate the body and sap it of the Vitamin B we need to keep our nails hard, hair think, and skin luminous. A deficiency of Vitamin B can result in dry, thin skin.
*I don't drink much coffee, not into alcohol and I drink tea in moderation. Yes!
7. Don't smoke. Enough said! It has been scientifically proven that smoking wrecks havoc on your skin and is very harmful to your health . Smoking depletes the body of Vitamin B and damages the capillary walls which deprives the skin cells of oxygen. Nicotine retards cell growth in the skin and reduces the blood supply. Smokers also age at four times the normal rate!
*I HATE smoke!*
8. Use sun protection every day, all year round, rain or shine. Conscientious use of sunscreen will prevent up to 90 percent of the skin damage cause by ultraviolet rays.
*I rarely use sunscreen, some of my makeup has SPF (sun protection factor), but I don't use a sunscreen lotion to protect myself from the UV rays, we'll change that!*
9. Get you fair share of shut-eye. lack of sleep can dehydrate the skin and cause flaky patches, pale or ashy skin, brittle nails and hair loss. And lets not forget about the unattractive puffiness around the eyes.
*I ALWAYS get enough sleep, sometimes too much sleep!*
10. Laugh. Relax. Enjoy life. "Exuberance is Beauty." - William Blake
*I practice all three, sometimes not enough, we'll change that!*
